Kongkee: Warring States Cyberpunk – Archival Record for SF Asia Art Museum
Year
2024
Location
San Francisco, CA, U.S.A.
In 2022, Hong Kong artist Kongkee was invited by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco to bring his work from Hong Kong to the city.
At the time, I met him as a reporter for a local San Francisco TV station, interviewing him and, through that encounter, beginning a new connection.
The exhibition, titled Warring States Cyberpunk, featured his animated work Li Sao Illusion (離騷幻覺) and a range of animated installations. The largest piece was a totem-like structure built from Hong Kong’s iconic neon signage, glowing with the memory of a city. After the exhibition ended, the museum reinstalled this neon monument on its terrace, facing Hyde and McAllister. By night, its light spills onto the street, adding color to the dark.
In 2024, the Asian Art Museum entrusted me with photographing Kongkee’s neon installation for its archival record. We chose to work in the winter dusk. San Francisco’s nights do not blaze with light the way Hong Kong’s do, so we had to catch the last fragile trace of daylight to reveal the contours of the surrounding city. Once night had settled in, I let the museum’s interior glow and the streetlights outside weave together, balancing the frame and letting the neon breathe within the darkness.
